Nevada Inmates Were Handcuffed When Guard Shot Them, Lawyer Says

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A lawyer who says her client was wounded in the same shooting says a 28-year-old Nevada state prison inmate shot and killed by a guard was handcuffed at the time.

The coroner in Las Vegas said Wednesday the death of Carlos Manuel Perez Jr. from multiple gunshot wounds was a homicide. Nevada prisons chief Greg Cox identified the wounded inmate as Andrew Arevalo.

Attorney Alexis Plunkett represents Arevalo. She says Arevalo and Perez were handcuffed separately when a High Desert State Prison guard fired at least three shotgun blasts last Nov. 12.

Cox says the two men were fighting when the guard fired.

Clark County Coroner Michael Murphy says ruling the case a homicide means that Perez died at the hands of another person. It doesn't establish fault.
